WHAT PRICE DO WE PAY FOR A BYPASS ?
IS OUR TRAFFIC PEACE WORTH 1000 HOUSES?
Tim and I have been passionate supporters of the Bypass for many years. The idea of funding our Bypass with the development of a new Celcon factory was widely supported in the village and by us, especially with the added bonus of employment.
Sadly, as we all know too well, that failed, and there is now no possibility of Celcon paying for it.
Paul Carter came out very bravely, to talk to us, and pledged to get a "fast-track" planning application for our Bypass. He also said that he would continue to talk with Celcon, but was already talking to "other developers".
But let us be brutally clear about the reality of " other developers".
The latest cost for the Bypass is put at £17million. The price has jumped because there are perhaps hundreds of tonnes of toxic waste on the site to be remediated, and further land will have to be purchased to provide a new and safe home for those b***** Great Crested Newts.
Simple arithmetic that even you and I can do really starts to put some meat onto the "other developer" scenario. If we allow a conservative £25k per house to pay for the Bypass, that is 680 houses. Using TMBC's own figures, a developer also has to build 40% affordable homes, and to pay for them needs to build an extra 40 homes for every 100 needed to pay for the Bypass, so our 680 becomes 952. Nearly a THOUSAND extra houses !! Borough Green currently has 1700 houses, and we are expected to believe that nearly doubling the size of our village will solve our traffic problems.
I am starting to believe that we have been suckered by our Borough Council : has this has ever been about traffic relief, it may always been about opening up Borough Green to Housing Developers. TMBC even have the gall to now classify us as "URBAN".
I may be wrong, I hope I am, but I am still just one voice: what do you think? Do we carry on fighting? email us at mike.cast@virgin.net .
If Borough Green wants it, we will return to the fray refreshed, but Tim & I need to know the people of Borough Green are aware of what they are asking us to fight for : a town of 2500 houses.
Have a look and see why our suspicions have been raised, make your mind up what is being planned: http://www.bypass.freeservers.com/contact_10.html
