Asany of you who try to use it know, the footpath has become steadily more and more overgrown in recent years. We have only recently been able to prove to KCC that it is a designated footpath and should be maintained by them, but they can't find the money. The Parish Council is concerned that using their groundsmen to do the job would create a precedent.

In the meantime parishioners struggle to get past, getting snagged on brambles, stung by nettles, or gave up and walked the long way around.

The Andy Johnson, our Community Warden, who was concerned about the security implications, put together a KCC sponsored scheme called "Safer Ways". Thats Andy in the first picture, hacking through the undergrowth.

With the blessing of the Baptist Chapel and the Parish Council, Andy  approached me as Youth Worker to find some willing volunteers from the Drop-in Centre, and you can just make out two of them in the picture buried in the hedge.

The lads : l-r Bart Hastings, Tom Greening and Leian Davies. They cut our the overheight growth in the top of the hedge, trimmed the sides, and strimmed the nettles, brambles and ivy at ground level. Here they are doing the final sweep.

They now have their sights set on the Crowhill - Maidstone Rd path - I don't know whether I can keep up with them....
